GEMS! COLORS OF LIGHT AND
STONE CLOSES AUGUST
24

Photo: Erica Van
Pelt

Don’t miss your chance to see
Gems! Colors of Light and Stone before it
closes August 24.  This exhibition
features most of the major gem species in every color
and variety known, as well as very rare examples of
little known color varieties. It also includes examples
of cut "collector" stones – those too rare to be used in
the general jewelry trade; antique jewelry from the
mid-19th to early 20th centuries, spectacular gem
carvings, and the work of Seattle-based
silversmith/contemporary artist, John
Marshall.  Only a few more weeks
remain, so be sure to visit the Bowers before August
24!  For a complete description of the
exhibition, click here.

MONKEY KING SWINGS OUT OF KIDSEUM AUGUST
31!

With the end of summer
comes the end of The Monkey King: A Journey to
China
, which closes August 31.
 Children of all ages have
delighted in this interactive exhibition that explores a
classic 16th century Chinese story, The
Journey to
the West, loosely based upon
the true journey along China’s Silk Road by the
Buddhist monk, Zuanzang.  If you
haven’t see it yet, there is still time to experience
the sights and sounds of China at a dozen
imagination-powered stations, try on Monkey’s costumes,
move like Monkey using techniques from traditional
Beijing Opera, soar on a cloud with Monkey King, and
learn about heroism!
This exhibit is made possible with support
from an anonymous donor, the Gardner Grout Foundation,
and Union Bank of California.  This
exhibit complements Terra Cotta Warriors:
Guardians of China’s First Emperor.
