GRAZING THE GREEN FIELDS OF BAR
Editor Hershel Shanks discusses where BAR stands on religious approaches to the Bible

Our latest issue of BAR
sees our editor Hershel Shanks addressing one of the more incendiary
issues surrounding our publication. Where exactly, many of our readers
would like to know, does BAR stand with regards to the debate on evolution vs. creationism? Is BAR
against some, or even all, religious approaches to the Bible? Certainly
not, Mr Shanks responds. He goes on to explain why people from broad
and diverse religious affiliations can benefit from the articles
published in BAR, and how the pursuit of history itself can also be an exercise of faith.

Our expanded news section continues to report on the latest happenings
in the world of archaeology. Two recent entries address details of DNA
analysis that is about to be performed on two mummified fetuses found
in the tomb of King Tut–a modern technological test that may solve a
very ancient mystery. Other developments include a possible revised
date of the venerated Shroud of Turin, and the discovery of an ancient
underground synagogue unearthed in one of Vienna’s central squares.

We have given our online readers access to an exclusive article on a
recent development that has set the world of Biblical scholarship abuzz
with debate. Professor Israel Knohl has examined an ink-on-stone
inscription and has come to the dramatic conclusion that the text
provides insight into a new messianic model. Professor Knohl has
published his research in the current issue of BAR,
along with the first, full translation in English of the text, which
has been named "Gabriel’s Revelation." Also on the site are guest
columns: by Susan Ackerman, who explains how reliefs from the Assyrian
palace at Nineveh came to find a home at Dartmouth College; by Keith
Schoville, on why the study of Near Eastern archaeology must go
hand-in-hand with the study of the Bible; and by Leonard Greenspoon,
who takes a humorous look at the use (and abuse) of a popular Biblical
phrase.
