JOSEPHUS ON THE
ESSENES

Read what the first-century
historian has to say about the Essenes in his own
words

The identification of the authors of
the Dead Sea Scrolls and the inhabitants of the ancient site
of Qumran as the Essenes has long been the subject of much
scholarly debate. Scholars examining these questions often
rely heavily on the writings of the first-century historian
Josephus and his description of this ancient Jewish sect.
Interestingly, researchers who fall on both sides of the fence
regarding these questions point to the same texts when making
the case for their hypotheses. Just what does Josephus say
about the Essene community? In BAR’s
e-feature "Josephus on the Essenes," we have posted
Josephus’s passages on the Essenes, translated by renowned
scholar Steve Mason, author of Flavius Josephus:
Translation and Commentary: Judean Antiquities 1-4
, and
of "Did the Essenes Write the Dead Sea Scrolls?" in the
current November/December issue of BAR. See
for yourself what Josephus had to say about this fascinating
ancient sect.

This week in the news, tensions are
high among local residents of Luxor as the Karnak Development
Project gets underway in one of Egypt’s most
archaeologically rich regions. Meanwhile, Swiss authorities
are gearing up to return 4,400 looted ancient artifacts to
Italy. In Jerusalem, an ancient gold, pearl and emerald
earring is found in a parking lot, while a simmering conflict
between the Greek Orthodox and Armenian churches erupts into
violence at one of Christianity’s most sacred sites. Plans
are in progress to resurrect one of the Seven Wonders of the
Ancient World in Turkey, and in Athens, Greece, the Vatican
has returned–albeit temporarily–a fragment of the Parthenon
frieze.

COVER PHOTO
CONTEST

Help us chose the cover photo for
the January/February 2009 issue of BAR!

As
Americans lined up earlier this month to cast their votes in
the general election, the editorial staff here at
BAR would like to continue the democratic
tradition by asking our readers to help us choose the cover of
our next issue. We are already getting excited about our
ever-popular Digs issue for 2009, and we’d like your help
deciding on the cover image. Simply take a look at the three
possibilities we’ve posted, and vote for your favorite by
November 19. The winning photo will be the cover of our
January/February issue, in which we’ll announce excavation
projects that are looking for volunteers next summer. Many
loyal BAR readers have had the trip of a
lifetime by participating in these excavations. Please vote
and let us know which photo would make the best cover of
BAR. We look forward to hearing from you!
