Next Stop – Kelso – The heyday of passenger trains is long gone. But the lovely lady of Kelso was meticulously restored as the National Park’s visitor center for the Mojave National Preserve. The former depot reopened in November 2005. James Woolsey, former chief of resource interpretation and outreach for NPS said the station is “a magical place — like an oasis in the desert.” More…

Centipedes Centipedes, with an evolutionary lineage dating back more than 400 million years, share ancestral roots with lobsters, shrimp and crayfish. Worldwide, some 3000 modern species have been discovered and described by scientists, who estimate that another 5000 species await discovery and description. The centipedes’ menacing appearance, secretive hideaways, nocturnal predation and wide diversity have given rise to a bewildering patchwork of facts, questions and folklore. More…

Monument Valley Monument Valley is not a valley at all, but rather a wide flat, landscape interrupted by colorful red buttes and spires rising hundreds of feet into the air. These are the last remnants of the sedimentary rock layers that once covered the entire region. Monument Valley is contained entirely within the Navajo reservation, occupying both Utah and Arizona. This is is one of the most remarkable, beautiful and famous landscapes in the world, early recognized by Hollywood as a stunning background for western films. More…

Yuma Territorial Prison Yuma Territorial Prison is a living museum of the Old West. More than 3,000 desperadoes, convicted of crimes ranging from polygamy to murder, were imprisoned in rock and adobe cells here during the prison’s 33-year existence between 1876 and 1909. The cells, main gate and guard tower are still standing, providing visitors with a glimse of convict life in the Southwest a century ago. More…

Rainbow Basin Northwest of Barstow, California, lies one of the most beautiful and mysterious locations in the Mojave Desert: Rainbow Basin. It’s a mishmash of shapes, colors and fantastic formations, a place where water and wind have worked magic, sculpting layers of sandstone and sediment to expose brilliantly colored formations. It changes moment by moment with the passing day, with shadows falling deep into canyons and cuts. Rainbow Basin is surrealistic, other-worldly, seemingly a land that couldn’t possibly exist on the same planet that holds forests and lakes and lush meadows. More…

DesertRoadTrippin’ – Day Trip 5: Touring the Big Boulders at Joshua Tree National ParkOne of my favorite things about visiting national and state parks is the transformation that occurs when you cross over into the park’s boundaries. As the landscape takes on a new form I feel like I’m entering into another world. Joshua Tree National Park is most definitely one of those magical places. The sharp angles of the Joshua Tree forests are the foreground to a wonderland of gigantic granite boulders and rock outcroppings. It’s an otherworldly landscape that takes you back thousands of years. You feel as if you might see a dinosaur step out from behind one of the Jumbo Rock piles at any moment. More…
