Flowers and Fantastic Views – Some rock formations look as if they just stepped out of a horror flick. Beware the rock goblins that lurk in the mountains around Titus Canyon. The road can be treacherous if you spend too much time gaping at super-sized stone gargoyles and goblins. More…
Flutterby Extraordinary – Butterfly magic means we can all be joyful children again — standing face-to-face with a colourful monarch butterfly in wide-eyed wonder. Or perhaps with a large, black pipevine with showy spots on its wings that look like orange eyes. More…
Desert Animal Survival – Lack of water creates a survival problem for all desert organisms, animals and plants alike. But animals have an additional problem — they are more susceptible to extremes of temperature than are plants. DESERT LIVING – Awesome Rockin’ Thunder – Some things are like a siren’s song. Classic cars. Harley motorcycles and rock concerts. Put them all together and I — AM — THERE! It had been a long time since I went to a real rock concert. So when I heard "Starship featuring Mickey Thomas" was going to be at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds as part of the Thunder on the Lot event, I just knew I had to go. More…
Trip of the Month – Mitchell Caverns – Mitchell Caverns are limestone caves that feature a wide variety of formations. Trips through the caverns are conducted by guided tours only and last about 1 1/2 hours. Although the tour is not strenuous, there is a half-mile walk to the cave entrance from the visitor center and another half-mile walk throught the caverns on uneven ground. The area became a California State Park in 1956 and still contains the only limestone caves in the California State Park system. More…

From Scott P. Richert, your Guide to Catholicism
Even before the Vatican issued its new "Norms on Most Serious Crimes" yesterday, I could tell you how the headlines would read: "Too Little, Too Late, Critics Say"; "Vatican Bows to Pressure"; "Will New Norms Make a Difference in Church’s Cult of Secrecy?" What the media won’t tell you is that these norms are the culmination of more than a decade of effort by one man–Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI–to rid the Catholic Church of the scourge of sexual abuse.
In a move widely seen as a reaction to months of media reports on decades-old cases of clerical sexual abuse, the Catholic Church has issued new "Norms on Most Serious Crimes," including clerical sexual abuse of children. How much of a change do the new norms represent, and what are the major changes?
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, best known for revealing the brown scapular to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251. How much do you know about this feast of the Blessed Virgin?
In honor of today’s feast, I posted a picture of a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel as this week’s Wordless Wednesday.
In the Catholicism Forum this week, Nicole Palmby, our moderator, and Karen Silver, one of our most active members, started a discussion about celebrity "worship" and idolatry. Does the American obsession with celebrities have something to do with our treatment of religion? Let us know what you think! And while you’re there, check out this week’s hottest threads:
