ANSWERS TO CAIN’S QUESTION
Leonard Greenspoon on the Biblical question “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
“Am I my brother’s keeper?” The first person to utter this question, Cain (in Genesis 4:9), more than likely expected, or at least hoped for, an answer in the negative. It is clear, though, that readers of the Bible are intended to respond in the positive: Yes, I am my brother’s (and sister’s) keeper. In contemporary society, at least as based on reports in major newspapers worldwide, the appropriate response to this eternal query is decidedly more mixed. Read more.

This week in the news, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has volunteered to return 19 Egyptian artifacts that came originally from the tomb of Tutankhamen. In Saudia Arabia, a hieroglyphic inscription bearing the name of pharaoh Ramses III has been discovered at the oasis of Tayma. Thirteen cuneiform tablets dating from 1900-1700 B.C. on display at New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) evidence the sophisticated mathematics that flourished in Babylonia (present-day Iraq)–long before the time of Pythagoras. In Berlin, scientists presented new methods to study the Dead Sea Scrolls, including examination with light, electron and environmental scanning electron microscopes, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, a feature in the December National Geographic magazine asks: Was the kingdom of David and Solomon a glorious empire–or just a little cow town? Read more.
THE CAVE OF JOHN THE BAPTIST: THE STUNNING ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY THAT HAS REDEFINED CHRISTIAN HISTORY
James F. Strange reviews Shimon Gibson’s book
This book is an engaging, first-person account of the excavation of an ancient cave near Beth Ha-Karim, west of Jerusalem, that Shimon Gibson, the author/excavator, associates with John the Baptist. The cave appears to have been first occupied in the Iron Age from the eighth to the sixth century B.C., but its most unusual period of use was from the first to third century A.D., when it seems to have had a cultic role (a role that continued as late as the eighth century A.D.). The book also reviews scholarly research on John the Baptist and Jesus and their relationship. It concludes with a series of speculations about John the Baptist. In no way does it live up to its subtitle. Read more.
