Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique Opens at the Legion February 7
Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique, on view at the Legion of Honor from February 7 to May 31, 2009, is the first comparative study of the work of the three greatest jewelry and decorative arts designers at the turn of the 20th century: Peter Carl Fabergé, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and René Lalique. Their rivalry found its stage at the 1900 International Exposition in Paris—the only exposition where all three showed simultaneously and where the work of each was prominently displayed. Some of their most elaborate designs for the Paris International Exposition are reunited for the first time in a gallery recreating the ambiance of this opulent international exposition. Looking critically at the development, design, and marketing of each firm, this exhibition explores how these designers responded to the demand for luxury goods in the years leading up to World War I. Accompanying the exhibition is Luxe at the Legion, a series of weekend programs themed to the exhibition that includes days devoted to Paris Style 1900 (2/28), Lalique Technique (3/14), Tiffany the Tastemaker (3/28), Fabulous Fabergé (11/11), and Divas as Patrons, Collectors, Artists (5/30). The programs include live music, video projections in the galleries, speakers, art-making projects for all ages, docent tours and a special Artistic Luxury-themed menu in the Legion Café. Last Chance to See Tériade, Editeur at the Legion
This weekend is your last chance to view Tériade, Editeur: Illustrated Books by the Founder of Verve in the intimate Reva and David Logan Gallery at the Legion. Tériade discovered the Paris art world in the early 20th century and befriended the artists Matisse, Maillol, Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Braque, and Giacometti. He became associated with the Surrealists, co-founding the Surrealist magazines Minotaure and La bête noir. In 1937 he conceived Verve, a lavish quarterly review of art and literature, and in 1943 he began to publish artist-illustrated books. Tériade is credited with integrating color into the design, illustration, and text of the artist book, with such masterpieces as Cirque, with illustrations by Leger. February Artist-in-Residence: Ajit Chauhan
February 4 to March 1, 2009, the de Young hosts Having Visions by Artist-in-Residence Ajit Chauhan. Having Visions is premised on the decimation of an imaginary culture. Items that have surfaced from this fictitious civilization are introduced to museum visitors, who are asked to supply the missing information for these “artifacts/artfacts.” The collective or communal energy put forward results in a shared vision in the attempt to rebuild a memory. The closing reception is on Friday, February 27, 6–8:30 pm. | |
